On Friday, David Casals was convicted of one count of possession of cocaine, one count of felony introduction of contraband into a county detention facility, and one count of misdemeanor introduction of contraband to a county detention facility.

The jury heard evidence that the defendant, a criminal defense lawyer, brought 28 pages of paper – containing bible verses and pictures of women – saturated with cocaine on Oct. 24, 2021.

Immediately after the verdict, Circuit Judge James Nutt sentenced Casals, 60, to one year in jail, three years of probation and 300 hours of community service. Other conditions include a substance abuse evaluation and completion of any recommended treatment.
