The Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office announces that Amari Wellons has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for the killing of a woman on Singer Island.

On May 7, a jury found Wellons, 21, guilty of first-degree murder with a firearm. According to the evidence presented in his trial: On Dec. 6, 2020, Maria Tritico, 32, was on the beach watching her fiancé play Frisbee when she was fatally struck by a bullet.

Earlier that day, the defendant arrived at the beach with his siblings and a friend. Also present was a rival group with whom the defendant had an ongoing feud. Witnesses observed both groups shouting and taunting each other.

Wellons fired five shots toward the rival group, including the bullet that hit the victim in the head.

“The defendant’s actions resulted in the senseless and tragic death of Maria Tritico and caused irreparable harm to her family and fiancé,” said Assistant State Attorney Marci Rex, who tried the case with prosecutor Jo Wilensky. “The impact of her loss on the community and her loved ones is immeasurable.”
