State Attorney Warns Public to Beware of “Jury Duty Scam”

As jury trials resume after the holidays, State Attorney Dave Aronberg is urging area residents to beware of the “jury duty scam” that can lead to financial harm and identity theft.

Over the last year, there have been an increasing number of reports that people are impersonating local law enforcement officers in phone calls to members of our community. These imposters advise individuals that they have missed jury duty and a warrant will be issued for their arrest. The fraudster then explains that their intended victims will face jail time unless they give up money, buy gift cards and/or provide personal financial information immediately.

“If you get a call from a stranger about a missed juror summons, simply hang up,” Aronberg said. “This is a total scam. Don’t fall for it!”

“Don’t ever give personal or financial information over the phone to someone you don’t know,” Aronberg said. “Anyone who asks for payments to be made through gift cards or wire transfers is most likely a scammer.”
