A former Wellington youth football league executive is now serving a prison sentence after admitting he stole money intended for new player helmets, the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office announces.

Richard Leventhal, 49, former vice president of Western Communities Football League, last month pleaded guilty to money laundering, a third-degree felony, and organized scheme to defraud, a second-degree felony.

Under the terms of his plea, he was sentenced to 27 months in prison and ordered to pay nearly $30,000 in restitution. He turned himself in on Tuesday to begin his incarceration.

In early 2022, investigators learned that Leventhal was responsible for purchasing the helmets and submitting receipts for reimbursement. However, Leventhal admitted in a phone call with the league’s treasurer and president that he instead took the money for his personal use.

Deputy Chief Assistant State Attorney Stacey Ibarra prosecuted the case. The victims supported the resolution.
