A jury on Thursday convicted a former Riviera Beach Police officer who was driving at extreme speeds when he crashed his patrol car and killed two people in the city, Palm Beach County State Attorney Alexcia Cox announces.

After a four-day trial, Carl Johnson was found guilty of two counts of vehicular homicide in a crash that occurred at about 1 a.m. on June 18, 2023.

Evidence showed the defendant’s marked Dodge Charger was traveling 94 mph — nearly three times the posted speed limit of 35 mph, and without its lights and siren activated — before colliding with the victims’ car at the intersection of Australian Avenue and West 13th Street. The 43-year-old driver and 29-year-old front-seat passenger died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The case was investigated by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Francine Edwards and Brooke Soloway of our Traffic Homicide Unit.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 7.
