Adrian Campbell, 29, was convicted of aggravated battery with a firearm, shooting into a building, and battery. These charges are punishable by up to 31 years in prison.

Circuit Judge Sarah Willis presided over the trial and scheduled a sentencing hearing on April 16.

Assistant State Attorneys Catherine Martin and Nathan Weinbaum, from our Felony DOVE (Domestic Violence Elimination Unit) prosecuted the case and obtained justice for the victim.

The narrative and facts of the case, as presented to the jury, are disturbing: Campbell and the victim were in a relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend, staying at the Super 8 Motel in Lantana one night in 2022.

They got into an argument about shutting the motel room door. The defendant then punched the victim in the face multiple times and hit her in the nose with his tablet so hard that it fractured her nose. The victim at this point asked him to leave, and he did.

But the defendant eventually came back to the motel and was captured on surveillance video getting out of his car, walking up to the motel room door, pointing his firearm at the door and firing a shot.

The bullet hit the woman in the hand, and she sustained a graze wound to her chest. The defendant then went to the door, began knocking and trying to get in.

Unsuccessful, he walked back to his car, and when he was standing by the driver side door he reached over the car and fired another shot at the motel room door. He then got in his car and drove away.

At trial, the defendant claimed he acted in self-defense and was just firing warning shots.
